Production Stills for Taco Time 2010 campaign

So 2009 came and is soon going and I find myself once again working on the set with UD Productions for Taco Time's 2010 campaign. It was a great pleasure seeing and working again with all of the talented individuals on the set over the four days of shooting. It seems like only a month ago we were doing the 2009 campaign. Here's to 2010 and to the yummy new menu items!

I love drummers

I love photographing drummers and last night I got to photograph two great ones. I also got the photograph the others in the bands but this post is about drummers. So here they are! Mindy DuPonte of Hellen. She's insane! I'm so glad I got to witness her madness.

And "G" of Headroom
Drummers rock. I know I've said that before. Well they do!

Rubi's on TV

A few images from my shoot with Rubi. She happily modeled for my "Fashion TV series" I'm working on. I still can't decide for sure if this is the one that will be included or not since we had several good ones. Decisions, decisions.

IMPETU

Here's a favorite from a CD artwork shoot with Impetu. Check them out here > IMPETU

"The Most Interesting Show in the World" gets more interesting.

The Dos Equis "The Most Interesting Show In The World" variety show at The Venue of Scottsdale was
more interesting (and bigger) than last year. It's not often I have a good time that ends with me being covered in shredded lettuce.
The slideshow of all the images should be up on the Phoenix New Times site soon.

These DJs each have their own style

Last night I photographed DJ Slippe and DJ Breez at MYST in Scottsdale. Here's a shot of each of them from the same spot with a 14-24mm 2.8 lens. Slightly different angles but

obviously the light is the primary factor in the totally different personalities of these working DJ portraits. Playing with and catching light at venues is all part of the fun. And hearing these guys spin is nice too. You can check out DJ SLIPPE and DJ BREEZ with these links.

Andrea

Here's my favorite from my shoot with model Andrea.

The road is calling

I miss traveling. And I think I'm starting to complain about it on this blog. I should go on the road if the road is calling. Not for too long. Just a short trip under a week because I'll really miss my kids.
Here are a few samples of my fine art travel photography. These images are from New York, Alaska, Oregon, New Orleans and San Francisco. Favorite places to me and all are available as prints here Victor J. Palagano III Prints
The Brooklyn Bridge image is a long exposure taken at night. The Alaskan glacier photo was taken with a pinhole camera. The bridge at Multnomah falls. I could live there. Like an Ewok I would. And sleep to the sound of the falls. New Orleans in the early morning fog is a wonderful place. This image of the Golden Gate bridge was taken on one of my first visits to San francisco. I had returned several times over a few years to photograph the bridge again from that exact spot. Anyway. The road is calling...

Phoenix Fashion Week 2009

This weekend I'm photographing Phoenix Fashion Week for Privacy Wear/Privacy Premium (PRVCY). A designer clothing company showing their line of great looking denim jeans for men and women as well as "breast cancer clothing". You can read about their dedication to help fight breast cancer and create awareness on their website Privacy Wear and PRVCY Premium

So why the photo of all of these Phoenix Fashion Week Photographers? I usually feel like a minority when I'm working. Not this time. It was more like "Phoenix Photographer and Fashion Week". I certainly felt protected from all of those models. And you need to see the people "working in the trenches" once in a while.
Now go check out the PRVCY jeans.

Always there but often overlooked

Photographers often complain about having to shoot from the sound board which is usually a good distance from the stage. This only happens occasionally but when it does you need a loooong lens like a 300-400mm to get any kind of close up. Also the angle isn't as dramatic or personal as when you're a few feet away from your favorite guitarist or pop diva. But it's not all bad shooting from there. This point of view actually make you see a very important element that I always capture when I shoot a concert. The fans. Without the fans there would be no concert. More importantly the people attending the show are quite a sight to observe. An ocean of heads and hands, sometimes lighters or camera phones. I love taking pictures of the crowds and of the bands with their field of fans in front of them. You can see exactly what kind of power music commands when you observe this energetic mass and seeing the synergy between them is wonderful. It's something a photographers camera should never miss at a concert but I think often does.

And you can get nice shots of drummers, which I love to photograph. Drummers are cool so they're usually up higher than the rest of the band. No that's not why. But they are cool.

You can see my other shots of the Killers and the Nervous Wreckords at the Phoenix New TImes website.

David Fefolt

Here's an image from my studio shoot with rock singer/songwriter David Fefolt. This was David's favorite one. I like it best as well.

"Victor is one of the most professional and personable photographers that I have worked with. He makes you feel like you're hanging out with one of your old friends and I think that's how he gets the "magic"... when you don't think about trying to look good, he takes a picture and you just do. What a pro..."

P!NK and The Ting Tings

I had the pleasure of photographing Pink on her Fun House tour at jobing.com arena with opening act The Ting Tings Sunday night. Here's a couple pics from the show. You can see more of my images from this colorful concert at Phoenix New TImes.

This shot of The Ting Tings' Katie White bouncing back to an erect position playing with her "looper" pedal on the platform below her is one of my favorites.

Fall Frenzy Music Festival in Tempe

Here's a few photos from Saturday at the Fall Frenzy Music Festival in Tempe.
To be honest I had more fun photographing the crowd than I did the bands but these shots of Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump in action and Pepper's Kaleo Wassman complete with crowd and scenic Tempe backdrop were a couple of my favorite captures. You can see a slideshow of all of them at Phoenix New TImes.

Back to the desert

Wait a minute. Back to? I live in the desert.
It's easy to get off track with all of the different work I've been doing. My fine art photography has taken a back seat for most of 2009 but I'm finally getting back around to working on my "Desert Nights" landscape project. I hope to have the project complete by the end of the year. A collection of Arizona landscape night photos. This image is of the Superstition Mountains lit by a full moon under the clouds taken February 2009, 11:40pm. There's even a few ribbons of snow on the top which may be difficult to see here.
My fine art photography can be seen and purchased at several online galleries. Here's one link below to my work available at VisionLight Gallery. Victor J. Palagano III Prints

Here's a few favorites from my studio shoot today with the Cramer/Sanchez Band. A talented group of musicians and great guys.

Here's what they had to say. "Your relaxed professionalism put us at ease and made the session go very smoothly. The finished photos look fantastic. You even made us look good! I'll pass the word.. EYEFUL IMAGES is the way to go!" - The Cramer/Sanchez Band

Looking back on myself

I can't believe it's already been three years since I did this self-portrait entitled "Detached". Here it is on the cover of Focus Fine Art Photography magazine, August 2006 issue. Time sure flies. Music and pictures for Blimpie

I shot some still photography and composed some music for Blimpie recently. I've been doing more music jobs lately which I've really been enjoying. I was missing it.

So here's my photo of a Blimpie combo and the link to the $5 Dollar Subs commercial I created the music for. They wanted something percussive to cause you to want to look at the TV during commercial time. You know, when your in the kitchen looking for snacks.

Engagement Photo Session

A few of my favorites from an engagement photo session with Steve and Christine.

Here's what Steve & Christine had to say.

“As soon as we first saw Victor’s work we knew there was no way we would have anyone else shoot our engagement photos for us. Even while at our very scenic locations we did not realize how much he would blow away our expectations! We are far more happy with the results than we ever thought we could be. Everyone that sees our engagement photos are stunned! Thanks Victor!”

Christmas in April with Northern Light Orchestra

A few images from the Northern Light Orchestra show at Orpheum Theatre in Pheoenix. Below is selected copy from the NLO MySpace page.

Northern Light Orchestra highlights majestic, orchestrated rock music featuring soaring vocals, incredible guitar solos worthy of true “Guitar Hero” status, and pounding rhythms sure to impress and invigorate the baby boomer generation that grew up on what is today classic rock! Combined with the talents of executive producer and longtime record mogul Russ Regan.

The brain child of re-mix keyboardist/writer Brian Stewart and produced by industry veteran Ken Mary, NLO is designed to create a total musical experience combining the powerful drama of Webber and Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” with the emotionally moving musical styles of Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, and Kansas. Vocalists and musicians appearing on NLO include members and former members of household names such as The Beach Boys, Sly and the Family Stone, Alice Cooper, Survivor, Steely Dan, Firehouse, Megadeth, Sister Sledge, Quiet Riot, Vanilla Fudge, Winger, Bob Carlisle, Guns and Roses, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, House of Lords, and Whitesnake just to name a few. Live performances will highlight a spectacular light and video presentation, theatrical movements, as well as incredible musicianship all assembled to tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ over two thousand years ago.

You can check out Northern Light Orchestra and get more info here NLO

Who's the boss?

Bruce Springsteen of course (and the E Street Band). Well, maybe not my boss, but the boss of a sold out jobing.com arena for the evening. I didn't have my 70-200mm 2.8 lens or a larger zoom for this show which was sad. I had to use my old DX 18-200VR which performs disappointingly compared to the 70-200mm 2.8 (as it should for the $1500.00 difference) We had to shoot from the sound board and having a 400mm would've been nice. The other four photographers there had them (as you can see from the image below) which made me feel a little "lens envy". Oh well. I still got good shots.

This is Kayla. Here are a couple favorites from our shoot. I've decided to make this old television famous and use for a series of photos. This is the second from the series so far.

For this image I composed the shot using an old Rolleiflex, then I shot the image in it's viewfinder using my D700 w/ Sigma 70mm macro lens. Sorry Photoshop, I love you, but not this time.

Promo shot for Lore. She needed a shot for the Russian music magazine Dark City which she has been featured in a couple of times. They wanted a photo of her holding up the magazine for inclusion in the magazine. Here it is.

Toybox - Band in a box

Promotional photos for the band TOYBOX. Initially I wanted to shoot them in a giant wooden crate suspended from the ceiling and get them spilling out and...Anyway, I had great expectations. Although I am happy with the results of what we ending up doing as an alternative. A much more cost effective alternative that was still creative yet well within the clients budget. We rented a storage unit for a day and lined the walls with paper and threw sheet music everywhere. It was fun. Like with all of my clients, I offered Toybox some different variations on the images. Here you can see a couple different looks I created using Photoshop.

My how the Funkadelic time flies - George Clinton 01.07.09

It's coming up on a year since I went to the George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic show at the Marquee Theatre in February of 2008. It doesn't seem like that long ago and now I'm back at the Marquee with the George and his gang again. I'm glad I got to shoot another Funkadelic show. It was one of those things I really wanted to do and it happened at the perfect time. It took some of the bad out of the bad day I was having. Last years show pics

The New Year's Resolution Portrait Project

New Year's Resolution Portrait Project. I photographed patrons holding their handwritten resolutions. The primary goal was to create fun photos that could serve as "reinforcement tools" or reminders of what was important to them in 2009. While many of the resolutions were lighthearted and focused on drinking and sex themes, many expressed more introspective personal goals for 2009. An insightful and entertaining experiment that made for a provoking and fun series of images. Please note there is some explicit written content - viewer discretion advised.

Portraits were taken at Phase 54 Nightclub between 10:30PM and 2AM. "New Year's Resolution Project" images and music ©2009 Victor J. Palagano III

Last night I photographed the amazing twelve year old Jack Ripper. He started playing at seven and now just five years later, his playing and stage presence is right up there with the best. Last night I went to shoot Smokescreen. I first met Luke the guitar player and fellow photographer at the Collective Soul concert about a year ago (pictures from that show blogged here 10.19.07) They played at Chasers Lounge, which was the first venue I shot a live music event (The post that started this blog). So what did you do this weekend?

I had a busy weekend. First I enjoyed capturing the Skyline Coyotes crush the Carl Hayden Falcons 59-0 Friday night, then I spent the entire day Saturday at Edgefest shooting bands like Civet and Pennywise (pictured here), Mickey Avalon, The Flobots, The Airborne Toxic Event, Thrice and others for my first freelance Phoenix New Times assignment. Sunday I had a shoot with local metal band Hemoptysis and then spent about seven hours reviewing and editing photos.

These are the kind of weekends a workaholic trigger happy photographer lives for!

Oh yeah. I also finally set the ISO on my D700 to 6400 on a gig (the football game). I was hesitant at first, but now...I am impressed.

Vistalance - Martini Ranch - 08.21.08

Vistalance. These guys put on a a great energetic show. This was my first concert gig where I got to use my new Nikon 14-24mm 2.8. What a great lens! :) But I guess it better be for $1600.00. I also used my new Sigma 70mm. I think it's the best lens I've found for under $500.00. A little slow focusing at times but it's sharp and beautiful!

Three Strikes

I love this time of year because of the rainstorms we get. The lightning was so active this past week I had to go take some shots of it.
Usually I struggle trying to chase it down but this time I decided to use my rooftop for the best seat I could get around here. Worked pretty well for the shots but it made my wife nervous. Nikon 14-24mm used here. Heck, who am I kidding. I use the 14-24 everywhere I can. I love that Nikon lens.

Midl - Arizona Band Photo Shoot Winners!

Last month I held a free photo shoot contest for one lucky Arizona band. The winning band is Midl. These guys were great to work with and went along with my diner theme. I think it fit them pretty well. Congratulations guys! You can check them out on MySpace. www.myspace.com/midlmusic

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic - Marquee Theatre - 02.13.08

I don't usually say too much in regard to the shows I've attended but this was the most enjoyable event I've had the privilege to shoot. It was also one of the most enjoyable concerts I've experienced. I was made to feel right at home and capturing this magical time from backstage was a real joy. I only regret I didn't get to really meet and share more with everyone on the P Funk Allstar team. When another opportunity to party with this awesome crew comes my way I will be there smiling from ear to ear once again. More photos from this show can be seen in my MySpace albums. (Thanks to GCPF, Brett Grau, Tom Norton)

Blimpie "Slice of Life"

I recently did a job as a second shooter/assistant on a Blimpie shoot. There will be a montage of stills within the television spot and three of my still photos will be used in the Blimpie commercial.

2 Hot!

I'm currently working on a series centered around nightclubs. This is an image from that series. With Jason's and Bethany's skills, I think this one is "well done"!

Megadeth "Gigantour" - Mesa Amphitheatre - 05.22.08

Megadeth was my favorite Heavy Metal band about ten years ago when I was a long-hair guitar player and wore black all of the time. Wait I still wear black all of the time. Anyway, I still admire Dave Mustaine's songwriting and guitar "riffs" and it was a pleasure to photograph the show. Tons of energy, lots of hair flying around and plenty of dedicated metal fans moshing outside in the rain. Job For A Cowboy, In Flames, Children Of Bodom and Megadeth were a treat to see. More photos from this shoot can be seen in my MySpace "Megadeth Gigantour" album.

It was a wonderful performance by these gifted musicians.
If you haven't heard Joey D. playing the organ, you don't know what your missing.

Power-ful photography

Three years ago I did a shoot at the Ocotillo Power Plant. Yesterday I had the good fortune to return and shoot there again. I had a different camera back then but it seems I also had a different pair of eyes as well. It's always a pleasure to return to old shooting grounds and revisit since things change with time. Both the subject and the photographer. These were taken with the Nikon D200 and D3.

Parking Garage w/ Amparo Elizabeth

I was drawn to this parking garage one night last year while looking for a location to shoot at night. I sent Amparo a picture and she decided it looked like a good place to bring a red dress. This is the result of our efforts - The one we both liked best.
